This is a selection of work from a series that functions as a meditation on identity and persona. The drawings and paintings portray figurative allegories of the complex issues of gender and sexuality.
I believe we are a visual culture and our identity is defined by the visual vocabulary we create. My work has been heavily influenced by the theoretical idea that all gender is a cultural construction. Gender is not binary, living only in terms of masculine and feminine. There is an aspect of subtle confrontation in these images to force an assessment of our own prejudice based on our reaction to these images. Only by honestly addressing the fractures caused by these judgments and assumptions, can we begin a dialogue and subsequent action that can initiate a broader understanding and acceptance.
