ARTIST STATEMENT

This body of work is a meditation on identity and an exploration of the influence of popular culture on gender. My work is heavily influenced by the theoretical idea that all gender is a cultural construction. In this work layered images construct a cerebral space that reflects the embedded associations of popular culture's imagery. The figure in each work represents a gender identity that exists in opposition to the cultural debris surrounding it. It's this conflict between the constructed cerebral environment and the formally observed figure that drives the work.
