Marvel of Design: The Bowden Spacelander Bicycle

"The Spacelander is a marvel of postwar biomorphic design. Its curving lines and amoeba-like voids represent the mutation of the prewar streamlined style into a new expression based on organic, rather than machine-made, forms."

Bowden with Prototype
Benjamin Bowden created the prototype in 1946, but it did not go into production until 1960. The bicycles were made completely of fiberglass and only 522 were ever made. Retail price was $89.50 each, today a mint condition could bring $15,000 to $16,000.
