Incarnation by Mark Ryden

I have long been an admirer of Mark Ryden. I love when an artist can create a beautifully painted surface image that is grotesque at heart. Why am I attracted to these images?

This painting is part of “The Gay 90’s: Old Tyme Art Show” which opened in late April at the Paul Kasmin Gallery. Take the image above (Incarnation #100, oil on panel, 2009), a sweet porcelin-like girl in a euphoric pastoral scene wearing a dress made of huge cuts of raw meat. By the way, he released a limited edition lithograph print of this painting ($500.00 each) that has long since sold out.
